Tunes Du Jour Presents 1996

Looking back at the music of 1996, what stands out isn’t just the diversity of sounds, but how confidently artists were breaking free from the constraints that had defined their predecessors. This was the year Oasis gave us “Wonderwall,” a song that somehow managed to be both anthemic and intimate, while across the Atlantic, The Smashing Pumpkins stripped away the grunge aggression for the wistful nostalgia of “1979.” The rock landscape was splintering in fascinating ways—Radiohead’s “High and Dry” hinted at the experimental evolution to come, Garbage fused electronic production with alternative rock attitude on “Stupid Girl,” and Marilyn Manson pushed industrial metal into the mainstream with “The Beautiful People.” These weren’t artists following a template; they were actively rewriting what their genres could be.

Hip-hop in 1996 was experiencing one of its most creative and commercially successful periods. 2Pac’s “California Love” brought West Coast rap to peak visibility, while Busta Rhymes announced himself as a force with the frenetic energy of “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check.” Fugees demonstrated how hip-hop could incorporate soul, reggae, and pop sensibilities on “Ready Or Not,” and Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” created a template for R&B-rap fusion that would influence the genre for years to come. Even Coolio, riding high from previous success, was experimenting with different flows and production approaches. The genre wasn’t monolithic—it was a conversation between different regional scenes, production styles, and lyrical approaches.

The year also belonged to artists who defied easy categorization. Björk’s “Hyper-Ballad” merged electronic experimentation with raw emotional vulnerability in ways few pop artists would dare attempt. Beck’s “Where It’s At” was a postmodern collage that treated genre itself as raw material to be sampled and reassembled. Underworld’s “Born Slippy [Nuxx]” became an unlikely anthem, a nine-minute electronic track that captured something essential about late-night urban experience. These weren’t novelties—they were artists working at the boundaries of what popular music could accomplish, proving that experimental ambition and accessibility weren’t mutually exclusive.

Meanwhile, more traditional songcraft was producing some of its finest work. No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” turned heartbreak into a massive pop-rock moment, while Mary J. Blige brought gospel-inflected power to “Not Gon’ Cry.” George Michael’s “Jesus To a Child” showed a mature artist at the height of his powers, and Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason” proved that blues-based simplicity could still cut through the noise. Even as production techniques grew more sophisticated and genre experimentation accelerated, these songs reminded listeners that a strong melody and honest emotion would never go out of style.

What makes 1996 particularly interesting is that it captured music in transition without feeling unstable. You had Britpop (Pulp’s class-conscious “Common People,” Manic Street Preachers’ working-class anthem “A Design For Life”), the evolution of alternative rock into more diverse forms, hip-hop’s golden age in full swing, and electronic music beginning to infiltrate the mainstream. The playlist of 1996 didn’t cohere into a single statement about where music was headed—and that was precisely the point. It was a year when artists had permission to explore, when audiences were willing to follow them into unexpected territory, and when the charts reflected genuine creative restlessness rather than calculated trends.

Tunes Du Jour Presents Dr. Dre

Dr. Dre is one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history. As a rapper, producer, and entrepreneur, he has shaped the sound and culture of rap music for over three decades. He is also a philanthropist who has donated millions of dollars to various causes, especially in the fields of arts, technology, and education. However, he is not without controversy, as he has faced accusations of misogyny and violence against women throughout his career. In this blog post, we will explore the achievements and challenges of Dr. Dre, and how his music reflects his life story.

Dr. Dre was born Andre Romelle Young in 1965 in Compton, California, a city notorious for its gang violence and poverty. He began his musical career as a DJ and a member of the electro group World Class Wreckin’ Cru in the early 1980s. He then joined forces with Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella to form N.W.A, a group that pioneered what became known as gangsta rap and brought the realities of the streets to the mainstream. Their second album, Straight Outta Compton (1988), was a landmark in hip-hop, featuring songs like “Fuck tha Police,” “Express Yourself,” and the title track, which showcased Dre’s production skills and the group’s raw and rebellious lyrics.

However, N.W.A soon fell apart due to internal conflicts and legal disputes. Dre left the group and co-founded Death Row Records with Suge Knight in 1991. He released his solo debut album, The Chronic, in 1992, which introduced the G-funk style, a subgenre of rap that used heavy samples of funk music, synthesizers, and melodic hooks. The album was a huge success, spawning hits like “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang,” “Let Me Ride,” and “Dre Day.” It also featured the debut of Snoop Doggy Dogg, who became one of Dre’s most frequent collaborators and protégés.

In 1996, Dre left Death Row Records after a violent incident with Knight and founded his own label, Aftermath Entertainment. He faced some initial setbacks, as his first compilation album, Dr. Dre Presents: The Aftermath, received mixed reviews and sales. However, he bounced back in 1999 with his second solo album, 2001, which was another commercial and critical hit. The album featured songs like “Still D.R.E.”, “Forgot About Dre,” and “The Next Episode,” which reaffirmed Dre’s status as a rap icon.

Dre also established himself as a prolific and influential producer, working with artists such as Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game, Kendrick Lamar, and many others. He helped launch the careers of some of the biggest names in rap, and earned multiple Grammy Awards and accolades for his production work. He also expanded his business ventures, co-founding Beats Electronics, a company that produces headphones, speakers, and streaming services. In 2014, he sold the company to Apple for $3 billion, making him one of the richest and most powerful figures in the music industry.

Despite his success and fame, Dre has also faced criticism and controversy for his treatment of women. He has been accused of assaulting and abusing several women, including his former girlfriend Michel’le, TV host Dee Barnes, and rapper Tairrie B. He has also been called out for his misogynistic lyrics, which often degrade and objectify women. Some of his songs, such as “Bitches Ain’t Shit,” have been seen as glorifying violence and rape against women.

Dre has apologized for his past actions and expressed regret for his mistakes. He has also tried to distance himself from his violent and sexist image, and focus on his positive contributions to society. He has donated millions of dollars to various causes, such as the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation, which he co-founded with music executive Jimmy Iovine in 2013. The academy aims to foster creativity and innovation among students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. He has also supported other initiatives, such as the Compton High School Performing Arts Center, the Global Fund, and the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Dr. Dre is a complex and controversial figure, who has both inspired and offended millions of people with his music and actions. He is a rap legend, a musical genius, and a business mogul, who has changed the course of hip-hop and popular culture. He is also a flawed human being, who has made mistakes and hurt others, and has supposedly tried to atone for his sins. Queer Music of the 1990s

What makes compiling lists of queer music by decades more challenging as we move forward in time is that the number of songs from which to choose keeps increasing greatly. For today’s playlist, I started with a list of several hundred songs by out LGBTQ+ acts or with LGBTQ+ subject matter, from which I whittled it down to the 30 tunes below. I second guess myself a lot. Should three of the first four songs be by straight-identifying acts? Should I include a lightweight novelty number over something by Maria McKee? (I decided yes, though I love Maria.) I didn’t necessarily choose my favorites. Instead I went for songs/acts that were on some level trailblazers. Here they be:

Nineties R&B

Today is Janet’s birthday!

The most popular r&b group of the nineties was probably Boyz II Mej3y64t.,huy

Sorry. My head hit the keyboard. Just typing that group’s name puts me to sleep. I find their music devoid of personality, emphasizing vocal histrionics over soul-felt passion. They should call themselves Boyz II Meh! Am I right, people? Tip your waitstaff.

Much of nineties r&b suffers from the same. Technique over feeling. Not all, though. I’m not damning a whole genre with a wide paintbrush, or whatever that expression is.

Today’s playlist showcases twenty of the best r&b hits from last millennium’s last decade, the decade being 1990 to 1999, for the purposes of this post. Nothing obscure this time. All of these songs received a fair amount of airplay back in the day.

Throwback Thursday – 1996

Per the site WhoSampled.com, Joe Cocker’s “Woman to Woman” (1972) has been sampled 24 times. Joe Cocker! Twenty-four times! Who knew?

The best-known track to sample “Woman to Woman” is 2Pac’s “California Love,” which utilizes the instrumental riff from the beginning of the Cocker song as one of its hooks. Here is “Woman to Woman:”

The Song Retains The Name

Today is Bobby Brown’s 46th birthday. A former member of New Edition, Brown had his first solo hit in 1988 with “Don’t Be Cruel,” which reached #8 on the Hot 100. Though it shares its title with an Elvis Presley #1 hit from 1956, Brown’s “Don’t Be Cruel” is not a remake.

That brings us to today’s playlist, which I call The Song Retains the Name. It consists of different songs with the same title. I initially planned to include twenty such songs, but more kept springing to mind. Before I knew it, I passed 100 entries. There are plenty more, so I decided to open this up to my reader(s). If you have songs that share titles you’d like to add, feel free to do so.

(NOTES: I included The Jacksons’ “This Place Hotel” because when it was released in 1980 its title was “Heartbreak Hotel.” Thought he didn’t have to, Michael Jackson, the song’s writer, later changed its name to “This Place Hotel” to avoid confusion with the Elvis Presley song “Heartbreak Hotel.” Whitney Houston didn’t feel the need to make the same Hotel accommodation.

Also, though it is listed on Spotify as “The Best of My Love,” the Eagles track does not have a “The” on the 45 or the band’s On the Border album.)
